Raksha Bandhan: Understanding the bond of affection and integrity
Raksha Bandhan is the Hindu and Jain festival centred around the tying of a thread on the wrist as a form of bond of care and protection. The festival is observed on the last day of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Shraavana, and this year the festival falls on August 26.

In most Hindu families, on Rakhi, sisters tie a cotton or silk bracelet or amulet around the wrists of their brothers to affirm the bond, affection and support of her brothers. At some places, sisters' place shoots of barley behind the ears of their brothers. However, the rite is also found between priests and patrons to affirm the bond of protection or care.

Many Vedic saints and the followers of Vedic culture perform hawan and pooja to purify body, mind and spirit. Also old sacred threads are removed and the new ones are worn on this day.

The value of affection is lauded on this day which is seen as the sensiment that subsists between brothers and sisters related to trust, care and protection. It is the warmth of relationship which is born out of heart for one another as siblings. The sweetness of temper and tenderness of feelings of sisters towards their brothers is reaffirmed on this day.

Affection is also seen as unconditional and uncritical acceptance and connect between brothers and sisters as a source of social wellbeing and happiness.

However noted philosopher and seer, J Krishnamurti, observes that affection and integrity are the two catalysts of understanding life which are not the product of time. These two elements are essentially timeless.

"If you notice, affection and integrity are not of time. You cannot have more integrity - that is mere political jargon. You cannot be more affectionate - you are affectionate, or you are not," he once said adding, "I think that is the quality of timelessness, and out of that timelessness there is affection."
